Does a shower head filter help your skin and hair?

Shower heads with a water filter are being promoted on social media to tackle acne, wrinkles and flaking. HLN asked dermatologists Dr Griet Voet and Dr Thomas Maselis whether that is true. According to Dr Voet, tap water in Belgium is safe; the difference lies mainly in water hardness. Hard water leaves behind more minerals and soap residue, which can make hair dull and irritate very sensitive skin.

There is no clear scientific evidence that hard water also causes more acne or wrinkles. For dry skin, long, hot showers are harmful in themselves. More important than a filter is a shower head that is regularly descaled and cleaned, as limescale can attract bacteria.

For people with dandruff, psoriasis or eczema, Dr Voet says an appropriate treatment from a doctor will do more than a filter.

Key advice

  • Descale and clean your shower head regularly.

  • If you have dry skin, do not shower for too long or too hot.

  • For dandruff, psoriasis or eczema, an appropriate treatment helps more than a filter.

“Above all, every shower head needs to be descaled and cleaned properly and often.” — Dr Griet Voet and Dr Thomas Maselis
