Does face taping really help against wrinkles?

On social media and among celebrities, face taping is popular: tape on the face that is supposed to prevent wrinkles. Het Nieuwsblad asked Dr Griet Voet whether it is of any use.

She explains that the technique comes from physiotherapy. Applied at night, tape can mainly limit wrinkles caused by your sleeping position. If you try it, it is best to use specific kinesiology tape that is not too strong for the face. There are risks, though: the adhesive can cause irritation or a contact allergy. Scientific evidence for the promised effects is lacking.

Treatments such as radiofrequency microneedling, laser, fillers and Botox® have proven their effectiveness. According to Dr Voet, tape does have a medical use: it supports a fresh scar so that it stretches less.

Key advice

  • Only use kinesiology tape that is suitable for the face.

  • Watch out for redness or itching caused by the tape's adhesive.

  • Do not expect a proven result against wrinkles from face taping.

“So there is a big market for such remedies; companies keep innovating and coming up with new techniques.” — Dr Griet Voet
