Does collagen chewing gum help against wrinkles?
Het Nieuwsblad, 20 October 2023
A collagen chewing gum against wrinkles? In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet looks at what the evidence says about collagen and about this form.

A Belgian brand launched a collagen chewing gum that is supposed to reduce wrinkles. Het Nieuwsblad had the product assessed by a dietitian and by Dr Griet Voet.
Dr Voet acknowledges that there is scientific evidence for drinkable collagen: studies show improved skin hydration, elasticity and density. Because the body's own production declines from around the age of 25, supplementing can be worthwhile, although it is not a necessity. Factors such as UV radiation, smoking and pollution also play a part.
According to her, there are no studies on collagen in chewing gum, so it is unclear whether you absorb a high enough dose this way. Moreover, chewing gum regularly can actually contribute to wrinkles around the mouth. In the article, the manufacturer responds that their type of collagen works at a low dose.
