How do you treat a pregnancy mask?
HLN, 26 August 2023
Dr Griet Voet in HLN on the pregnancy mask (melasma): causes, prevention and which treatments are possible after pregnancy.

In HLN, Dr Griet Voet explains what a pregnancy mask or melasma is: irregular brown patches, mainly on the forehead, cheeks, temples and upper lip. Hormonal fluctuations, genetics, certain medications and above all UV light play a role. It mainly affects women of childbearing age, and people with darker skin types are more susceptible.
Sometimes the patches fade after giving birth, but additional treatment is often needed. Strict sun protection is the basis. The usual depigmenting creams must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and peels and laser are also best postponed; in the meantime, make-up can camouflage the patches. Laser is not suitable for every skin type. Dr Voet advises starting intensive treatment in autumn, when UV radiation is weaker.
Key advice
In spring and summer, apply sunscreen consistently and wear a cap or hat.
Depigmenting creams, peels and laser only after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In the meantime, camouflage the patches with make-up.
Preferably start intensive treatment in autumn.
“Melasma mainly affects younger women between the ages of 20 and 40. In other words: childbearing age.” — Dr Griet Voet
