What does a hair transplant involve?
HLN, 7 August 2024
How does a hair transplant work, is it permanent and what should you look out for? Dr Joren Brassine answers the key questions in HLN.

In HLN, Dr Joren Brassine, aesthetic doctor and hair specialist at Clinique Dermatologie Gent, and a fellow hair surgeon answer questions about hair transplants. They explain the two common techniques, FUE and FUT, in which hair follicles are taken from a donor area and transplanted under local anaesthetic.
Dr Brassine clarifies that mainly hairs that are not sensitive to hormones are moved, so the result is in principle permanent. To preserve existing hair, he recommends medical treatment. The procedure is usually not very painful; the anaesthetic injections are what you feel most.
After the procedure, friction, strong sun and intensive exercise are off limits for a while. The doctors also see many patients seeking a correction after a procedure at a less careful clinic.
Key advice
Have the cause of your hair loss investigated before a transplant.
Continue treatment after the procedure to preserve your own hair.
Avoid friction on the treated area and strong sun for the first few weeks.
Choose an accredited, reliable doctor: your donor area is not inexhaustible.
“As soon as your hair looks thinner, you can opt for a hair transplant.” — Dr Joren Brassine
