Injectable lip balm: what is it and who is it for?
HLN, 16 December 2023
What is injectable lip balm? Dr Fran Baete and Dr Bob Casaer in HLN on skinboosters with hyaluronic acid for dry lips and their limited risks.

Dry, chapped lips in winter and a balm that does little: as an alternative, so-called injectable lip balm is gaining popularity, especially in the Netherlands. In HLN, aesthetic doctor Dr Fran Baete and plastic surgeon Dr Bob Casaer explain what lies behind it.
It is a skinbooster: a more fluid form of hyaluronic acid than in classic fillers, which retains water and stimulates the skin to produce extra collagen and elastin. The aim is deep hydration of the lips, with far less volume increase than a lip filler. Because the product is injected very superficially, the risks are limited; bruising and swelling are the most common. The treatment does need to be repeated regularly.
Key advice
Expect mainly hydration and little extra volume, unlike a lip filler.
Allow for possible bruising and swelling after the treatment.
“With a skinbooster in your lips you mainly get hydration, without much change in shape, unlike a classic lip filler” — Dr Fran Baete and Dr Bob Casaer
