Is castor oil really a miracle oil for skin and hair?

Actress Helen Mirren said she uses castor oil for her skin, hair, eyebrows and nails. HLN asked Dr Griet Voet whether the inexpensive oil lives up to its reputation.

Dr Voet calls castor oil an old and well-known home remedy that mainly moisturises. Because well-hydrated skin ages more slowly, it can play a role in anti-ageing, and it can soften dry hair ends and add shine. But it is no miracle product, she says: there is little scientific evidence, and the claim that the oil promotes hair growth is not true. Against wrinkles, face creams with vitamin A, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid work better.

She also warns that the oil can clog pores and is therefore not suitable for skin that is prone to spots. An allergic reaction is rare but possible.

Key advice

  • Castor oil moisturises, but do not expect miracles from it.

  • Avoid the oil if your skin is prone to acne or blackheads.

  • Against wrinkles, creams with vitamin A, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are more effective.

  • Stop if you experience burning, itching or redness after use.

“Applying extra oil to acne-prone skin, whether on your face, back or shoulders, is therefore not a good idea” — Dr Griet Voet
