Is an egg white mask good for your skin?

Masks made of whipped egg white are a fast-growing trend on TikTok. In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet explains why she is not in favour of them.

There is no evidence in the medical literature for the promised effects, while raw egg can cause irritation, allergy and bacterial contamination. A similar warning applies to lemon. Some foods, such as oats or yoghurt, are found in adapted form in skincare products, but that is something else than smearing them straight from the kitchen onto your face.

Dr Voet advises choosing products with ingredients that are better supported by evidence, such as vitamin C, niacinamide or retinol. If you are unhappy with your skin, you are better off asking a dermatologist for targeted advice than experimenting yourself.

Key advice

  • Do not put raw egg white on your face, partly because of the risk of bacteria.

  • Avoid lemon on the skin because of the risk of irritation.

  • Instead, choose a serum or mask with evidence-based ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide or retinol.

  • If you have skin problems, ask a dermatologist for advice instead of experimenting yourself.

“Raw eggs can contain bacteria such as Salmonella, so I personally would not recommend an egg white facial.” — Dr Griet Voet
