Does a firming body cream really make your skin tighter?
Het Nieuwsblad, 10 June 2025
Does firming body cream work? Dr Griet Voet in Het Nieuwsblad on Q10, antioxidants and why an ordinary moisturising lotion is often enough.

Firming body creams promise tighter skin and better cell renewal. In Het Nieuwsblad's 'Werkt dat wel?' ('Does it actually work?') column, Dr Griet Voet and toxicologist Vera Rogiers put those claims to the test. According to Dr Voet, Q10 plays a role in the energy metabolism of cells and can have an effect, but that depends on the concentration, which is often not stated.
The evidence for plant-based antioxidants in such creams is also limited. Dr Voet suspects that most firming products contain too little active ingredient to make a real difference. Any good body lotion hydrates the skin, which already makes it feel smoother and firmer. More important than the claim is a lotion that suits your skin type. According to both experts, massaging it in thoroughly can help further.
Key advice
Choose a body lotion that suits your skin type, oily or dry.
A special firming cream is usually not necessary: moisturising already does a lot.
Massage the cream in thoroughly and consistently.
