Psoriasis: what treatments are available today?

In HLN, Emy (40) describes how psoriasis has affected her life for twenty years, both physically and emotionally. Dr Griet Voet provides the medical context to her story.

She explains that psoriasis is a non-contagious inflammatory disease in which the skin renews itself too quickly because of an immune reaction. Heredity plays a role, and the condition can also affect the joints. Dr Voet points to the psychological burden: stress and a lower quality of life can make the symptoms flare up, so support from a psychologist can be worthwhile.

She goes through the treatment steps: first creams and shampoos containing corticosteroids and vitamin D, then light therapy, followed by medication that suppresses the immune system and finally biologics, which make the lesions largely disappear in many patients.

Key advice

  • Treatment usually starts with a topical treatment and a gentle washing routine with good hydration.

  • Light therapy at the dermatologist is effective, but requires a few sessions a week.

  • Do not underestimate the emotional impact: psychological support can also help the skin.

  • If nothing else works, biologics are possible under certain conditions.
