Why do your lips need sun protection too?
Het Nieuwsblad, 26 July 2024
In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet explains why lip balm with SPF makes sense and which lip lesions you should have checked.

More and more brands are launching lip balms with a sun protection factor. In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet calls this a good development: the lips also suffer sun damage.
People who spend years in the sun unprotected are more likely to develop sun damage and skin cancer on the lips. A dry, rough patch or a thickening that does not heal may indicate a precursor of skin cancer; have it checked. Older people with fair skin and men are more susceptible.
People who often get cold sores, or who are more sensitive to the sun because of a condition or medication, should also give their lips extra protection.
Key advice
Reapply lip balm with SPF every two hours and after swimming.
If you often lick your lips, apply it more often.
Have a rough patch on the lip that does not heal checked.
If you often get cold sores, protect your lips against UV.
“Your lips can also be damaged by the sun.” — Dr Griet Voet
