What does fermented skincare do for your skin?

Fermented skincare is gaining popularity. In Het Nieuwsblad, several dermatologists, including Dr Griet Voet, give their verdict on the trend.

According to Dr Voet, such products can support the balance of skin bacteria and are usually gentle on the skin. Some fermented ingredients have a strong hydrating effect, and small studies point to improvements in pores, sebum production and pigmentation marks.

She remains cautious, however: a beneficial effect has only been demonstrated for a few substances. Moreover, the products must be prepared and stored safely, and by-products of fermentation can irritate sensitive skin.

Key advice

  • Do not expect a miracle cure: the evidence only applies to a few substances.

  • If you have sensitive skin, test carefully, as irritation is possible.

“The claim that fermented skincare is generally always better is therefore too broad and not yet substantiated” — Dr Griet Voet
