What really helps against bags under the eyes?

On Ann and Daan's programme on Radio 2, Dr Griet Voet talked about eye bags and dark circles. There is no miracle cure. Eye bags are usually caused by fluid build-up under the eyes; getting enough sleep and sleeping on your back with your head slightly raised helps. Cold reduces swelling, and an eye cream with active ingredients is useful as skincare, but does not work straight away.

Bluish circles are blood vessels showing through the skin and are difficult to treat; make-up is the simplest solution, and a tear trough filler is an option for some patients, performed by an experienced doctor. Patches do little and can irritate. She advises against haemorrhoid cream under the eyes, because the cortisone it contains can thin the skin and trigger infections with prolonged use.

Key advice

  • Get enough sleep, on your back with your head slightly raised.

  • Cool the area with a cold pack to reduce swelling.

  • Don't use haemorrhoid cream under the eyes.

  • Only have a tear trough filler placed by an experienced doctor.
