What should you know about shingles?

Following actress Greet Rouffaer's lengthy recovery, Dr Griet Voet answers the most important questions about shingles in Het Nieuwsblad.

Shingles develops when the chickenpox virus, which lies dormant in the nerve pathways, becomes active again, for example due to stress, fatigue or weakened immunity. After itching or a burning sensation, blisters appear on red skin, usually on one side of the body and often with severe nerve pain.

Starting antiviral medication quickly slows down the infection; ordinary painkillers are often not enough and specific nerve pain medication may be needed. She calls the claim that shingles is fatal once the circle is complete a myth.

Key advice

  • If you suspect shingles, see your GP or a dermatologist promptly.

  • Don't touch the blisters and keep them dry.

  • Wash your hands after contact and avoid contact with babies, older people and pregnant women.

“Shingles is not life-threatening, but certain vulnerable groups can be prone to complications.” — Dr Griet Voet
