Does a pimple patch work on mosquito bites?
HLN, 27 August 2024
Dr Griet Voet in HLN on pimple patches for mosquito bites: why they stop you scratching but do not help with the itch, and what does work.

On social media, pimple patches are being recommended for itchy mosquito bites. In HLN, Dr Griet Voet explains what such a sticker does: it works like a small dressing, keeps your fingers away from the bite and creates a moist environment that can support healing.
The patch does little for the itch itself, because a mosquito bite is a reaction to the mosquito's saliva. It can, however, stop you scratching the bite open, which can lead to inflammation or a scar. According to the dermatologist, an ordinary plaster does the same; if you are allergic to plasters, it is better to avoid them.
Cold relieves itching fastest. If it bothers you a lot, a doctor can prescribe a cream, and when travelling, prevention with an insect repellent remains the best approach.
Key advice
Hold an ice cube against an itchy bite for quick relief.
If you keep scratching, cover the bite; an ordinary plaster will do.
Very bothered by it? Ask your dermatologist or GP for a prescription cream.
Ask your pharmacist for advice on insect repellents for your trip.
“But it doesn't have to be a sticker; an ordinary plaster works just as well.” — Dr Griet Voet
