Does a filtered shower head give you better skin?
Het Nieuwsblad, 22 January 2025
Does a filtered shower head help against dry skin or acne? Dr Griet Voet in Het Nieuwsblad on hard water, chlorine and what you can realistically expect.

Filtered shower heads promise radiant skin and less acne. In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet examines these claims. Belgian tap water is strictly monitored, but its hardness varies by municipality. Hard, calcium-rich water can dry out the skin and worsen eczema or psoriasis. Chlorine and bacteria are generally not a problem at the normal concentrations found in drinking water.
A filter can improve water quality and help reduce dryness, especially in areas with hard water, but it is not a solution for all skin problems. Research gives no clear-cut answer, partly because different filters are tested each time. People with sensitive skin are likely to notice more of a difference. For advice on the type of filter, Dr Voet refers people to specialists in the field.
Key advice
If you suffer from dry skin and have hard water, a filter or water softener can help.
Do not expect a miracle cure for acne or all skin problems.
Maintain the filter and replace it on time.
