Does buccal massage help against wrinkles?

Het Nieuwsblad's 'Werkt dat wel?' ('Does it actually work?') column focuses on buccal massage: a facial massage in which the inside of the cheeks is massaged as well. Dr Griet Voet explains how the technique works and what you can expect from it.

The massage can reduce tension in the face and stimulate blood circulation. That it improves the skin sounds plausible, but has been little studied. According to her, the firmer feeling fades within a few hours or days. It does not remove fat, so it is no alternative to a procedure.

Those looking for relaxation and a fresher appearance may benefit from it. Those expecting lasting extra volume or fewer wrinkles will, according to Dr Voet, probably be disappointed.

Key advice

  • See buccal massage as relaxation, not as a wrinkle treatment.

  • Do not expect a lasting effect on volume or face shape.

“In reality that is not the same thing: the massage does not remove fat cells” — Dr Griet Voet
