What skincare do men need?
Het Nieuwsblad, 24 March 2026
Does every man need a day cream? In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet explains what a simple skincare routine for men looks like.

Prompted by Philippe Geubels, a loyal day cream user, Het Nieuwsblad asked Dr Griet Voet and a fellow dermatologist about skincare for men. Dr Voet explains that men's skin is thicker and produces more sebum, so ageing sets in later but then progresses faster, and that shaving causes additional irritation.
According to her, a day cream belongs in every bathroom: hydration supports the skin barrier and reduces irritation after shaving. Men with oily skin are best off choosing a light, non-comedogenic formula. From the age of forty, hydration, retinol and antioxidants become more important.
As a basic routine, she recommends cleansing, moisturising and applying sunscreen in the morning, and cleansing and moisturising in the evening. Common mistakes are washing only with water or with harsh soap, and forgetting sun protection.
Key advice
Cleanse in the morning with a mild cleanser instead of ordinary soap.
If you have oily skin, choose a light, non-comedogenic day cream.
Use sunscreen every day, possibly built into your day cream.
Scrub no more than once or twice a week and avoid alcohol-based toners.
“Cleansing daily prevents clogged pores, spots and shiny skin.” — Dr Griet Voet
