How do you protect your skin against dry winter weather?
HLN, 8 January 2024
Dr Griet Voet in HLN on dry winter skin: which creams help, why very rich creams disappoint and when to see a dermatologist.

In HLN, Dr Griet Voet and skincare expert Ciska Dings give advice for dry, dull winter skin. Cold air, central heating and hot showers dry out the skin and weaken the skin barrier.
Dr Voet recommends skincare containing urea and points to the dermatological ranges available at the pharmacy. A very greasy cream feels rich but often does not hydrate sufficiently and can cause blackheads or spots in young people; they are better off choosing a non-comedogenic product. People prone to eczema should moisturise daily and use a shower oil instead of soap. If the skin stays dry, an underlying skin condition may be involved and a visit to the doctor or dermatologist is advisable. Light therapy is sometimes used for itching and eczema.
Key advice
Choose a cream containing urea, preferably from the pharmacy.
Young people are best off choosing a non-comedogenic cream or gel.
Use a shower oil instead of ordinary soap or shower gel.
If your skin stays dry or itchy, consult a dermatologist.
“If problems persist, it is best to consult a doctor or dermatologist.” — Dr Griet Voet
