How do you keep your feet healthy in summer?

In summer, feet have a hard time from walking barefoot, dryness and sun. In Het Nieuwsblad, experts share tips, including Dr Griet Voet. She points out that the tops of the feet and the toes are often forgotten when applying sunscreen with sandals on, and can therefore get sunburnt.

She advises moisturising the soles, heels and dry patches, but not applying a thick layer between the toes, to avoid fungal infections. Cutting away calluses yourself can cause small wounds and infections, especially with diabetes or poor circulation. Leave your nails unpolished now and then, and do not soak your feet for too long.

Wearing flip-flops in communal showers and drying your feet thoroughly help against athlete's foot and warts. Wounds that do not heal or become painful are best checked by a doctor.

Key advice

  • Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and your toes too.

  • Dry your feet well, especially between the toes.

  • Do not cut away calluses yourself, especially if you have diabetes.

  • Wear flip-flops in communal showers and around the pool.

“In summer, feet do not necessarily need more care, but above all adapted care.” — Dr Griet Voet
