Is guava really good for your skin?
Het Nieuwsblad, 28 July 2025
Dr Griet Voet in Het Nieuwsblad on guava in skincare: what the fruit contains, what has been proven and why hype is not a good guide.

Guava is turning up in creams, serums and shampoos. In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet and a fellow dermatologist look at whether the tropical fruit lives up to its reputation.
Dr Voet confirms that guava is rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C, which is beneficial for the skin. But vitamin C is an unstable substance, and some components barely penetrate the skin. A product with a stabilised form of vitamin C can therefore be more useful. There are some promising studies, but clinical evidence is still limited.
Her conclusion: take online promises with a pinch of salt and choose skincare not on the basis of hype, but on the basis of your skin type and age.
Key advice
Choose a cream based on your skin type and age, not on a trend.
Plant-based products can also cause irritation or allergy.
Always apply sunscreen when you go out in the sun.
“Applying something because you saw it on social media is not a good motivation in any case.” — Dr Griet Voet
