Minoxidil for hair loss: what are the drawbacks?

HLN looked into how well minoxidil works against hair loss and what its downsides are. Dermatologist Dr Griet Voet and aesthetic physician Dr Joren Brassine explain that minoxidil prolongs the growth phase of the hair and can make hair thicker and denser, although the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood. The result varies greatly from person to person.

The doctors point to possible side effects of the lotion, such as itching and irritation, and sometimes extra fine hair on the face. A foam version is often less irritating. The tablet form has more serious potential side effects, which is why doctors usually prescribe the lotion first.

The medication is mainly used for hereditary or hormonal hair loss. A full head of hair is never guaranteed; seeking medical advice beforehand remains advisable.

Key advice

  • Minoxidil does not work equally well for everyone; do not expect a guarantee.

  • Itching or irritation from the lotion? A foam version is often better tolerated.

  • Ask a doctor for advice before you start, especially for the tablet form.
