Four summer skin complaints: how to recognise and treat them

In HLN, Dr Griet Voet goes through four skin complaints that often crop up in warm weather. Heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked; cooling down, loose clothing and keeping the skin dry help. Red to purplish-red patches on the lower legs after prolonged exertion in the heat are harmless and disappear on their own.

In skin folds, heat, moisture and friction can make the top layer of the skin soften and break down, giving bacteria and yeasts free rein; keeping folds clean and dry is the basis. Sun allergy is a hypersensitivity to UV light on skin that is seeing the sun again for the first time. If you suffer from it, it is best to build up exposure gradually and protect your skin well. For persistent or pronounced symptoms, a dermatologist can start targeted treatment.

Key advice

  • Wear loose clothing and keep your skin cool and dry if you have heat rash.

  • Keep skin folds clean and dry; pat rather than rub.

  • Build up sun exposure gradually if you have sun allergy.

  • For stubborn complaints: have a dermatologist start treatment.
