What can you do about acne scars?

In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet goes through the options for acne scars. The best approach starts early: having acne treated in good time reduces the chance of permanent scarring. If scars do develop, no treatment removes them all in one go; a combination of techniques usually gives the best result.

Chemical peels gradually improve the surface of the skin, and a TCA peel is used for deep, narrow pits. Microneedling, possibly with radiofrequency, stimulates collagen with a short recovery time. The fractional CO₂ laser is one of the most powerful options, but requires more recovery time. Peels and laser are preferably done in autumn and winter, while microneedling can be done all year round. Dr Voet sometimes combines treatments with PRP and warns that devices for home use cannot be compared with medical ones.

Key advice

  • Have acne treated in good time to prevent scarring.

  • Expect a combination of treatments and several sessions.

  • Ideally, plan peels and laser treatments in autumn or winter.

  • Do not expect a comparable result from home rollers and scar ointment.

“Unfortunately, there is no miracle treatment that fades all your scars in one go.” — Dr Griet Voet
