What really helps against cracked hands?
HLN, 8 February 2026
Which products help against cracked hands? In HLN, Dr Griet Voet tests ten products, from petroleum jelly to crack-repair paste, and gives advice for overnight care.

In HLN, Dr Griet Voet assesses ten products for cracked hands. Cracks develop when overly dry skin splits open, often because of cold air, frequent handwashing, soap and hot water. Hand eczema and contact allergy can also play a part. If you do nothing, the cracks may deepen.
Petroleum jelly protects, but does not actively repair the skin. Zinc ointment is mainly useful for weeping cracks, and products with lots of plant extracts or fragrances can actually irritate damaged skin. According to Dr Voet, special crack-repair pastes work best: they fill the crack and support healing. Deep cracks are best treated in the evening with a thick layer of paste under a plaster or cotton glove. If the cracks keep coming back, consult a dermatologist.
Key advice
For cracks, choose a thick crack-repair paste instead of an ordinary cream.
Treat deep cracks in the evening and cover them with a plaster or glove.
Avoid heavily fragranced products on damaged skin.
Consult a dermatologist if the cracks keep coming back.
“For cracks, special crack-repair pastes make the difference.” — Dr Griet Voet
