How do you help a scar heal well?
HLN, 28 March 2026
In HLN, Dr Griet Voet explains how to help a scar heal well and which treatments improve its structure and colour.

A Polish short-track speed skater showed the scar she was left with after a skating accident. In HLN, Dr Griet Voet explains what influences how a scar heals and which treatments are available.
Good basic care is essential: repair creams containing zinc, silicone gels or patches, and high sun protection to prevent discolouration. Your movements matter too: frequently stretching the skin around a fresh scar can affect its shape.
For the structure of the scar, microneedling with radiofrequency and fractional CO₂ laser are options, possibly combined with PRP. Discolouration is only addressed afterwards, for example with vascular lasers. Several sessions are always needed.
Key advice
Care for a fresh scar with a repair cream or silicone product.
Protect the scar well from the sun.
In the first year, avoid movements that strongly stretch the skin around the scar.
Expect several sessions if you have treatment.
