Eat Your Skincare: what does food do for your skin?
Het Nieuwsblad, 10 December 2025
Dr Griet Voet in Het Nieuwsblad on the Eat Your Skincare trend: what healthy eating can do for your skin and where its limits lie.

The 'Eat Your Skincare' trend is doing the rounds on TikTok: healthy food instead of creams for beautiful skin. In Het Nieuwsblad, Dr Griet Voet is positive about it, because healthy, varied eating can do no harm. However, you will only see results if you change your diet for the long term; an extra portion of vegetables now and then makes little difference.
She puts the claims into perspective: a balanced diet does not prevent all skin problems, and a lot of acne has a hormonal or hereditary cause. The link between gut flora and skin has not yet been studied sufficiently. She mentions omega-3 fatty acids, vegetables, fruit and zinc as useful, while food high in added sugars, and possibly dairy, can affect acne.
Sometimes treatment is still needed, topical or oral, alongside a healthy diet.
Key advice
Change your diet for the long term rather than eating something extra now and then.
Focus on vegetables, fruit and omega-3 fatty acids.
Limit foods with added sugars.
Do not expect food alone to solve skin problems.
“I can of course only encourage healthy, vitamin-rich eating; it is by no means harmful.” — Dr Griet Voet
