Why do nails become brittle and what helps?

Brittle nails are common, and twice as common in women as in men. In HLN, Dr Griet Voet explains where they come from and assesses a range of nail products.

According to her, a calcium deficiency is rarely the cause. Usually it comes down to external factors: frequent contact with water and cleaning products, gel polish or artificial nails that are removed roughly, and nail polish remover containing acetone. A vitamin deficiency or an underlying condition sometimes plays a part. Nails that are too hard are not healthier.

Nail hardeners give quick results, but can dry out the nail in the long run. Products that moisturise and support the nail structure work more lastingly. Supplements mainly make sense if a deficiency has been shown.

Key advice

  • Wear gloves for household chores.

  • Avoid harsh acetone remover and rough filing.

  • Use a moisturising hand cream regularly.

  • Only take supplements if there is a genuine deficiency.

“So wearing gloves for household chores can already make a big difference.” — Dr Griet Voet
